History

Exquisite style of South Indian jewellery comes from the influence of temple art. Temple jewellery, as they came to be called, was designed by master craftsmen of Tamilnadu, South India, centuries ago. These adorned the icons of the Gods and Goddesses in temples. The royalty, who reigned over the land during those times, patronized them.

Soon these came to be adopted by the Devadasis, the temple dancers who were considered to be consorts of the presiding deity. Today, these traditional designs have moved out of the temple precincts and are patronized by the Bharatanatyam (Indian classical dance) dancers.

Earrings and necklaces are prominent among the variety of temple designs whereas, bangles and rings are few. The variety in necklaces includes pendants with exquisite floral, peacock and parrot motifs.
